How Do You Use Non-sparking Tools Correctly?

December 06, 2022

Non-sparking tools are hand tools made from a material with special non-sparking properties (usually a copper alloy).

This property ensures that these tools do not emit hot sparks. Normal steel tools made from chrome vanadium and iron alloys emit frictional sparks. These sparks can acquire higher temperatures and have the potential to ignite flammable gases and vapors. Non-sparking tools may emit cold sparks with very low heat and cannot ignite flammable gases.

Who needs to use these tools?

Hand tools are a complete set of tools suitable for any industry. Many industries, including but not limited to oil and gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, fertiliser, steel, automotive, FMCG, petrochemical companies, etc., have operators who perform maintenance or daily operations in specific areas within their plants. These areas are identified as hazardous areas and operators in these areas should be compelled to use non-sparking tools.

Correct tool selection.

Different hand tools are designed for different applications. Choosing the correct non-sparking tool for your application is the most important step for any company. While this may sound obvious, we have seen many users procure the incorrect tools for their applications. When these tools are put into use, the end user faces a number of challenges and incorrectly assumes that the tool is not working. We have been helping our customers to match the right tool to the job, developing bespoke tooling solutions where many of the standard tools do not meet the requirements. This ensures that non-sparking tools are used in the workplace, thus ensuring safety.

How do I use non-sparking tools correctly?

Once you have matched the correct tool to your application, it is equally important to understand the limitations of each tool. In the case of standard hand tools, they are designed for a specific purpose and using them outside of this usually constitutes misuse. An example of this is - double-ended spanners should only be used by hand. Tapping a double-ended spanner or using a pipe to increase leverage and apply more torque are 2 applications that were not designed for it and are a gross misuse of the tool. Similarly, tapping a screwdriver or using a spanner as a hammer is a serious abuse. All of these are indications that the correct tool does not match your application and that the tool is being misused to 'get the job done'. This can lead to performance problems and a significant reduction in tool life, as well as greatly increasing security risks.

Maintenance tips for non-sparking tools

The following are easy-to-follow tips for maintaining your tool sparkler.

1. Clean the tool after each use to avoid contaminants being deposited on the surface.

2. Use the right size tool for any task in the acetylene plant. This will help to avoid the chance of the tool slipping out of your hand and creating sparks.

3. Never store tools in areas where they may come into contact with wet acetylene.
